University of Washington (UW) FuZE Lab researchers have recently announced a breakthrough in Z-Pinch plasma control. Z-pinch reactors use the plasma to create magnetic fields within the plasma to control the plasma itself. The plasma typically bulges and bursts due to instabilities. The UW team used sheared axial flow to control the magnetic fields to hold the plasma in place 5,000 times longer than a traditional static plasma.
