Commonwealth Fusion Systems

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) is a private company and is a spin-off from research work originally started at MIT. Their reactor designed called SPARC is a tokamak design. SPARC will feature newly developed high-field magnets built using high-temperature superconductors. CFS expects to be the first to achieve net energy. (Editor’s Note: “join the club”). CFS will direct $30 millon USD for superconducting electromagnet research be performed at MIT while CFS designs a reactor that will integrate that technology. CFS hopes to have a commercial reactor by 2033.

CFS has received over $50 million USD in funding. This includes funding from Breakthrough Energy Ventures (BEV) which is directed by Bill Gates.
